Project Overview

The Strava app’s ‘Weekly Snapshot’ feature presents a summary of user activity over the past week, but it occupies too much space on the home feed and directs users to their profile instead of providing more detailed weekly activity information. I saw an opportunity to improve this feature, making it more space-efficient and providing a better user experience.

Research & Insights

- Research Focus: I examined apps like Duolingo, Codecademy, and TikTok to understand how their “streak” features enhance user engagement through efficient space usage and intuitive UX design.

Key Findings

- Pop-Up Pages: Duolingo’s streak feature includes a separate page that details user progress, which could translate well to Strava's weekly snapshot by showing detailed activity summaries.
- Space Efficiency: Instead of overwhelming the feed, apps often minimize streaks into icons or buttons, reserving space for other content while making the feature accessible.
- Visual Feedback: Icons and buttons change color when streaks or recaps are available, giving users quick visual cues.

Problem Statement

- Challenge: Redesign Strava’s ‘Weekly Snapshot’ feature to conserve screen space and provide users with more detailed, specific data about their weekly activities.
- Objectives:
          - Reduce the visual dominance of the snapshot feature on the home feed.
          - Provide detailed weekly activity summaries without redirecting users to their profile.
          - Offer a more efficient way to access weekly snapshot across various app pages.

Concept Development

- Initial Sketches: I proposed two design iterations:
          - Minimized Banner: Displays the same data but in a more compact design.Replaces the ‘See More’ button with a clickable title that opens a pop-up summary page of weekly activities.
          - Nav Bar Button: Removes the ‘Weekly snapshot’ banner and replaces it with a button in the navigation bar. When active (i.e., if activities occurred in the past week), the button changes color.Clicking the button opens the same pop-up summary. (I mislabeled the weekly snapshot as weekly recap in sketches)

Survey Results

          - Users appreciated the reduced screen real estate usage in the home feed.
          - The pop-up snapshot offered a more intuitive and detailed view of weekly activities, aligning better with user expectations.
          - The minimized banner proved to be the optimal solution, as it provided immediate access to data while reducing visual clutter.

Experience & Growth

- Skills Enhanced: Gained experience in refining an existing feature through research, iterative design, and user testing. Improved my ability to make design decisions for enhancing user experience within an existing product.
- Project Learnings: Designing improvements for an existing app is different from creating something new. It involves understanding the current UX, how users interact with features, and balancing functionality with space efficiency.
